Fabio Cannavaro is the only defender in history to win the FIFA world player of the year award as well as the oldest recipient. Fabio Cannavaro lead the Italian side in 2006 and won the FIFA world cup

Cannavaro is one of few defenders to have ever won the Ballon d’Or, He win the Ballon d’Or in 2006. Cannavaro played as both sweeper and stopper. He was noted for his outstanding in his fierce defending, aggressiveness, and interception.

2006 was the best year for him, as he won 10 individual awards. Cannavaro is named in the ESM team of the year one time.

With Italy, he won back-to-back U21 world cups. After Maldini’s retirement, Cannavaro led Italy to victory in the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. There he was given the nickname “The Berlin Wall” by the Italian supporters due to his defensive performances, which saw Italy keep five clean sheets and concede only two goals, neither of which were in open play.
