Afghanistan Cricket Team Squad for ICC World Cup 2023

Afghanistan cricket team comes under the administration of the Afghanistan Cricket Board, which was founded in 1995. In 2001 Afghanistan Cricket Board became an affiliate member of the ICC. The Afghanistan Cricket Board managed to become a member of the Asian Cricket Council in the year 2003. Afghanistan has been a part of the cricket world since the 19th century, but it started to gain success in the 21st century. In 2017 Afghanistan was able to become a full-time ICC member after playing international cricket for a decade. the Afghan team with its highest score in T20I is ranked 10th in the Twenty20 International. 

Afghanistan Cricket Team Captain: Hashmatullah Shahidi

Shahidi enjoys captainship over the Afghan team in ODI and Test cricket. In October 2013 Shahidi played his debut ODI game against Kenya. He also has the honor of being the first Afghan player to score a test double hundred. Shahidi is a top-order batsman and is considered one of the best batsmen in the Afghanistan cricket team. 

Star Player: Mohammad Nabi

Mohamad Nabi is considered the star player of the Afghanistan cricket team. He is a right-handed batsman and an all-rounder. Just like Shahidi, Nabi also comes among the best batsman on the Afghanistan cricket team. Among his peers, he is known for being calm and professional, while on the field he is a force to be reckoned with. He has made one century and fifteen half-centuries in ODI matches. 

Afghanistan Cricket Team Coach: Jonathan Trott

Trott is a former professional cricketer and was a part of the English cricket team. He also played for his native land, South Africa, and New Zealand. Due to his amazing performance on the field, Trott was named ICC and ECB Cricketer of the Year in 2011. Trott retired from being a cricketer in 2018 and started to pursue a career in coaching. His hard work bore fruit and in 2022 he was made the head coach of the Afghanistan cricket team.

History of Afghanistan at the Cricket World Cup

Cricket is the most popular game in Afghanistan and since the mid-1800s, Afghans have been obsessed with cricket. Afghanistan couldn’t play ICC World Cup till 2003 as it wasn’t a member. Afghanistan cricket board became an affiliate member of ICC in 2001 but the team didn’t appear in the 2003 world cup as it wasn’t a member at the time of qualifying matches. Afghanistan took the World Cup field in the 2007 tournament.
