IPL 2022 Mega Auction has so much hype around it as we move closer to this big event. BCCI and IPL have already announced some of the rules, format and how much teams can spend during the 2022 Mega Auction and this page will be your one stop shop for all the information regarding 2022 IPL Mega Auction which is set to take place in December 2021.

BCCI and IPL has yet to announce the final date for the upcoming Mega Auction event but it is believed it will take place before the year end which means we are looking the third week of December 2021 for the possible Mega Auction which will be a 2 day event

Auction Salary Cap – 90 crores Per team

IPL has set a fixed salary cap for all participating teams which will be 90 crores and no team can spend over that limit.

Maximum of 90 Crores budget allowed to all participating teams.

Player Retention Rules

are allowed to retain maximum of 4 players going into the Auction and there is a format teams have to follow to retain number of players. Salaries given to players retained will be deducted from the overall salary cap of the team (90 crores)

How IPL retention works?

Old Franchises are allowed to retain maximum 4 players and there is are set rules which teams have to adhere before the Auction for the player retention.


  1. Player 1 – 16 Crore
    If team were to retain four players, 1 player will cost 16 crores.
  2. Player 1 – 12 Crore
    2nd retained player will cost 12 crores.
  3. Player 1 – 8 Crore
    the third player will cost 8 crores.
  4. Player 1 – 6 Crore
    If team decide to retain all four qouta of allowed retains the fourth one will cost 6 crores.

However if teams were to retain only 3 players, it will cost total of 33 crores with numbers being 15 crore for 1st player, 11 crore for 2nd player and 7 crore for third.

Similarly, if team were to retain only 2 players it will cost them 24 crores. Last but not the least if team were to retain only 1 player it will cost 14 crores.

The confirmed list of players will be announced by BCCI & IPL before the mega auction takes place in december. Punjab XI are unlikely to retain any players while the two new comers can Lucknow and Ahmedabad teams will have chance to pick three players from the remaining pool as retainers.
