This is a list of Most Snooker World Titles ordered by the number of “ranking titles” they have won. A ranking title is a tournament which counts towards the snooker world ranking . Higgins made breaks of 87, 131 and 86 on the way to a comfortable 6-3 victory over Sunny Akani.

Two-time finalist Mark Allen also advanced with a hard-fought 6-4 win over Joe O’Connor.

It is almost three decades since O’Sullivan, 45, collected the first of his seven UK Championship titles in 1993.

And a sumptuous opening red was a timely reminder of the quality of a player who – despite being regarded as one of snooker’s greatest ever stars – has downplayed his enthusiasm for participating in recent years.
